Surrounded by Bodies, Alone in the Crowd (Techno-rant Villanelle) Surrounded by bodies, alone in the crowd Eyes fixed on devices, to all else so blind. No meeting of minds, electronically wowed. Buds in their ears, where music plays loud, Ignoring all others is how they unwind Surrounded by bodies, alone in the crowd. Now even the elders, like youth are so proud Disconnected on purpose, without thought unkind, No meeting of minds, electronically wowed. With each new cell phone, more heads are bowed Engrossed in new toys, held hands are untwined, Surrounded by bodies, alone in the crowd. Long talks now rare, the text honor endowed Replacing life's warmth, once joy, now a grind, No meeting of minds, electronically wowed. While there is yet time, be now disallowed Ignoring of others, the curse of mankind Surrounded by bodies, alone in the crowd. No meeting of minds, electronically wowed. |
The Sky has Enough Stars (upon the death of my beloved companion, Star) Cold and dark, the winter night Like any other, but not really. I, preoccupied, lost in thought Make deck boards creak as I walk. Walking, listening, and yet unaware The absence of welcoming whimpers of joy Only the coldness, the silence, The grip of chilled and icy dread. From darkest of shadows Your form comes into view Not barking, not even breathing, The quiet is screaming. Though hearing nothing, I still disbelieve And taste salty tears as I cradle your warmth. Imaging Star-like sounds faintly heard, Serenading the greedy sky. |
